Tax preparation and tax planning

Most of my work is IRS and state tax problems. But I also prepare returns and do tax planning for individuals and small businesses, and I take that work just as seriously. A lot of tax problems start with a return that was filed late, filed wrong or never filed. Good prep and a little planning keep you out of that.

Tax preparation

For individuals

  • Federal, New York and New Jersey income tax returns, including New York City

  • Self-employment income, side businesses and rental property

  • Moving between states, or living in one state and working in another

  • Extensions, amended returns and prior years you never filed

For small businesses

  • S corporation, partnership and LLC returns

  • Sole proprietors and freelancers (Schedule C)

  • Sales tax and payroll tax filings

I file accurately, I ask questions when something looks off, and I explain what you're signing before you sign it.

Tax planning

Planning is about not being surprised in April. I look at where your income is headed and what you can still change before the year ends. That might be:

  • Setting your quarterly estimated payments so you don't owe a penalty, or a balance you can't pay

  • Choosing the right setup for a business: sole proprietor, LLC or S corporation, and what a reasonable salary looks like if you're an S corp

  • Planning around a big event, like selling property, starting or closing a business, or moving to another state

  • Using retirement contributions and other legitimate ways to lower your tax

I don't sell schemes, and I won't sign off on something I don't think holds up. If an idea sounds too good to be true, I'll tell you what I think.

If you're coming out of a tax problem

If I've helped you with the IRS or the state, getting current is only half of it. Staying current is the other half. Missing a return or falling behind on estimates can undo a payment plan or an offer. I can prepare your returns and set up your estimates going forward, so the problem stays behind you.

For accountants and CPAs

If you refer a client to me for an IRS or state problem, that client stays yours for prep and planning. I handle the problem and send them back. Glad to put that in writing.
